After having a challenging student life in Denmark for 4 years, I want to share with you what makes me an internationally minded person.
Being internationally minded is not something you can learn in lessons, it is an attitude, a way of thinking and being, of accepting other ways of thinking, cultures and doing are equally as valid as our own.

Cerasela Bortos-glamthug, the perks of living in zurich

Hey! I hope you are having a great start into the week and I hope you have been waiting impatiently to bring back to life my blog.

When I started writing on this blog 6 years ago, I wanted to have it as a diary, where I can reveal special moments, even though there was the risk to become very vulnerable. Whenever something less pleasant happens or you are having a bad mood, you have to choose wisely where your energy goes: to the positive or negative side because in the end you attract what you think.

Living in one of the most expensive cities in the world isn’t that pink as it seems from my Instastories (@glamthug where I am the most active and I am overwhelmed by your positive feedback), but I can’t complain either.  There are sacrifices you have to face. For example, we live in one of the best neighborhoods, but we share a studio of 25 square meters . I can’t buy many clothes , because of the little place and very tight budget. However, it’s hard to stop myself because I am so active by participating to as many events as I have energy and every time I need to.. stand out, but most important feel confident. I don’t want to get distracted by all this apparently perfect environment where we clink glasses of Prosecco like we have something special to celebrate. To be clear, I don’t mind drinking Prosecco, but what I learnt in Denmark is to enjoy the little things and I think that helps me a lot in getting through the hard times.

Despite all these facts, I  am extremely grateful for having the chance of moving to Switzerland, to a big city life after living in Denmark for 5 years.  In less than a year, I managed very fast to expand my network, where I have met wonderful people ( for example the one who took these photos – thezurichdiaries )

By the way, don’t forget to use my code: GLAMTHUG for -20% DISCOUNT. I know it might be abusive advertising, but I truly love the IDEAL OF SWEDEN brand as they empower bloggers and  when you order such a product, you  get a product that not only protects your phone, but also makes it fashionable and stylish.

As you might know I moved to Zürich for 3 months AT LEAST, that’s why I included on my Instagram profile ‘New in Zurich’.

         Long story short WHY

  • The power of love dragged me here
  • I am seeking job opportunities or planning to apply for a Master, so we can get rid of this LDR (~3 years was enough). If the one who is reading this is looking for an employee, I am THE ONE!
  • When you graduate in Denmark, the government is providing the graduates with unemployment benefits for maximum 2 years, when looking for a job in Denmark or maximum 3 months in other European country, so I took this chance.
  • I wanted to experience life in a bigger city, including higher fees along with a more exciting lifestyle

I don’t see what there is not to love about this city, especially when you are ‘ New in Zürich’ so I will specify few reasons to love this Zurich:
1. One of the most international city. The largest group of foreigners is from Germany ( 82 5467) , followed by Italy, Portugal, Serbia, Turkey, Kosovo, Austria and Spain (11 457).

2. It is the biggest city in Switzerland, though not too big but the right walking-distance city.

3. Many events. There is always something happening. Rare is the weekend without a festival, event or local holiday.

4. Public transportation is well organised.  It’s mind blowing in a good way to get around the city as the busses and trams have their own line.

5. The cars are WOW.  If you are a fan, just follow them on Instagram.

7. Cultural Highlights. Whether the National Museum, Kunsthaus Zürich, Cabaret Voltaire or the famous Zurich Opera House, or many exhibitions the city on the Limmat offers first-class cultural events.

8. You are surrounded by water. During the nicest season of visiting Zurich, the lake transfers to a melting pot of all social and sportive activities.

They say Sundays are for laying in bed, watching a movie and eating junk food. I disagree, especially that this Sunday the 22nd of May will be Zulu The Color Run Aarhus. The event has been present since 2012. It became so popular that the event conquered  more than 40 countries with millions of runners in over 200 cities each year ever since. It’s purely a fun run where you will be covered in color from head to toe.

Why to train alone in the gym when you can run 5 km out surrounded by friends, sun and music in the background? Your body will thank you later for this outdoor activity and moreover you will have a blast. Let’s celebrate joy, healthiness and originality by joining Zulu The Color Run Aarhus. What are you waiting for?
Purchase your ticket from here .

What should you expect? Well, dance music blaring, DJ’s who are pumping up the crowd, cool people, prizes thrown out to the best cheerers and nevertheless many colors. Additionally, you will have crazy photos, free Lipton juice and Wish Smoothies.  Forgot to mention one of the best parts of the Color Run: the after party as everyone is painted and keeps on dancing just like here:

Color Run Aarhus wasn’t my first experience with this non-toxic colored powder.  In fact, I had been through this before, but this time was twice crazier. Why crazier? In general, because of the people and the weather conditions. Yeah, living in Denmark always comes down to weather, when finding excuses or describing situations.

Since the first race in 2012, The Color Run exploded across the globe. From more than 50 events and 600,000 participants in 2012 to over 100 events and more than 1 million participants in 2014. However, I wanted to join this event, as soon as I’ve heard about it. I’ve tried to convince more people from Horsens, in order to go as a team and obtain a good discount as well. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen because of different priorities and mainly the discouraging weather. When I started to have second thoughts of selling my ticked, I finally convinced a friend to join me and to run for 5 km.  Besides, worrying about parking place and arriving late, everything went great. As soon as we got there, Read more

The last month of 2014 was crowded, a bit stressful in what the exams are concerned, but most of all meaningful because I spent it with the people I love the most. Oh yeah…and tons of traditional food. Unfortunately, I couldn’t enjoy snow on Christmas days, but the real winter atmosphere came later. The summary of December 2014 is showed in the next photos by starting with the day before leaving to Romania and finishing with New Year’s Eve.

I had an amazing holiday and I am so blessed that I am currently  spending  again the holiday after exams in Romania.jup Read more

where to stay in malta

Meanwhile you may be mesmerized by the fact that winter is coming, as I can see the Facebook photos from Romania, I will reveal my holiday in Malta, where sun is still working hard to satisfy the tourists.

As soon as I landed there,  the heat hit me together with the amalgam of feelings of meeting my boyfriend. The flight was enjoyable, especially because I had window seats, a tasty breakfast offered by the airline company and plenty of time to spend in the duty-free shops.  Having heard that Frankfurt airport is huge, I became scared of the thought that I might miss the flight. Obviously, I didn’t let that to occur.

When I walked out the arrival door,  my eyes were desperately searching for him in the crowd, but he was buying a coffee for me, instead of flowers. My boyfriend arrived 2 hours earlier than me, so he got everything set up, in what reaching the final destination concerned.  We took  the crappy X2 bus, without AC and luckily, I was inspired enough to stuff the sweater and scarf into my luggage, because those 30 degrees were making me feel like an Arabic woman. Not only did we visit half of Malta by bus for over 45 minutes, but we also had difficulties in finding the hotel. We had 2 hotel names on the booking, so we firstly checked-in at Blue Sea St George, which was the wrong one as there were 4 beds and almost no sea view. We were headed to the right one, La Valette, where the conditions were slightly better, but kinda the same sea view and additional pool view, which wasn’t necessary at all. The room was big enough and the other details matched people’s reviews: ‘ You get what you pay for’.

I’m looking forward to the memories of right now!

Dark wine mixed with another glass of wine or just take a look at my leather alike vest and my beloved camera. Nothing on purpose, as usual but I believe that my Nikon is more likely to be a jewelry, which has emotional and practical value. The suspenders broke the ice, as usual,  even though I was the one breaking them a bit. I’ve been looking to buy more similar pairs, but I was out of luck. The necklace was a gift from Read more

The second day was a blast, because I had a day off and plenty of time for myself. I woke up early in the morning with a big appetite for a smoothie and I ended up drinking that and eating baklava and in Bazar West. Then, I went for a ‘short’ walk downtown, where I got completely lost because of the tempting sales.  Read more

The 1st day of Northside Festival was like a dream that came true, because I had the amazing occasion to see Lana del Rey, but of course there were many levels to pass until I got there. I could have easily paid 250 euros for a ticket and enjoy the whole festival without any worry, but I did it in a cheaper and funnier way by applying as a volunteer. In fact, it’s not about the money, but it’s more about the experience that you get and how much you expand your network. Nevertheless, my good friend, Anca is a master in volunteering, so I followed her advice. If you want to enjoy 3 days of the festival, you will have to work 16 hours. So far so good. When I received the acceptance email, I was both exhilarated and afraid of the next steps, as my team was called Read more

aalborg carnival, events in denmark, aalborg, costumes in denmark

Denmark is known for its crazy party people and that’s why there are many festivals during the year. Aalborg Carnival is one of them or better said, THE ONE.Actually, this carnival is the second largest carnival in Scandinavia and it meets no barriers. It hosts over 100,000 people annually and more than 30,000 are wearing funny or extravagant costumes. This carnival takes place the last week of May and there’s usually a theme each year, where people are dressed accordingly and have a lot of fun. Creativity, happiness and madness are a must there.

Approximately 300 VIA students, including me went there by buying a ticket for DKK 100 from DSR. The buses left at 7 am from uni and we went back to Horsens at midnight. It was my first experience there and it’s impossible to have regrets, despite of the huge amount of dirt Read more

After having a tumultuous week with the final project, I decided to have time on my own. We already had a nice reunion  in the downtwon student bar with few of my classmates and friends on Friday, but I needed a treat for the next day. So, a friend of mine met my desire and wrote me surprising message on Facebook:

Hey girls! I hope your doing fine after tomorrow, soooo today let’s make a chill day :p Let’s meet at my place around 6, make a dinner, have some wine, watch a movie, smoke some water pipe, paint our nails or whatever… So I was thinking maybe we could split something with the food, so I am gonna make some delicious hot vegetable dish, Martina said she is gonna bring a big salad, Cerasela can bring the wine.Raluca, can you take care of the meat or some fish? I have Lithuanian candies for dessert if you want. Moreover, feel free to suggest the movie , I will download it before.

I couldn’t refuse her, because I started already to search for girlish activity. It was a must to bring my camera, makeup and wine. I was late, as usual, but the host was doing a great job by preparing a special dinner together with 4 girls. The healthy and tasty smell brought me to my friend’s house, same as in the Tchibo or Nescafe old commercials. When I saw my girls booming with energy, especially Martina, I knew that a good night was just about to come. Read more

I am flying to Barcelona on 1st of April and it’s not a joke, even though it’s April Fools’ Day. I was initially supposed to go only  with my dear polish friend to break the routine. I later discovered that other 4 guys have chosen the same destination and period, so a crazy and cost-effective idea crossed in our mind: to rent a flat together. It was something spontaneous, considering the fact that I know 2 of the guys and my friend doesn’t know none. After sleepless nights of selecting the perfect basic flat, we agreed on the best one because it’s situated in the center, in Plaza de Catalunya and it’s big enough for us.

The conclusion was more up to the majority, the boys and I was shocked to find out that they liked this girlish apartment. Moreover, one of the boys discovered that the flat is right next to H&M and Zara, so it won’t be a problem if I don’t have something to wear, because I can go there even in pajamas.

Wish that I could say ‘ I have never been so well-prepared’, but I am lacking of energy because of the National Conference with AIESEC. At least, my outfit is ready with ‘Great Expections’ and my phone is full of applications (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.slashmobility.restalo&hl=en -for food,  https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.guides.minube.barcelona&hl=en , https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tripadvisor.android.apps.cityguide.barcelona for visiting )which are meant to ease these 4 days in Barcelona.

I can’t wait to explore the city for the 2nd time!  I want to enjoy the Spanish sun, try to speak Spanish, take breathtaking and fancy photos, drink Sangria, eat Paella, visit a lot by foot, make new Spanish friends, check the nightlife, make shopping on Passeig de Gracia, where would Julia Roberts shop during Pretty Woman movie, etc

I have high expectations and I hope this trip will meet them!
